Description: This course provides the knowledge and skills to create a Data Warehouse model from an OLTP (On-Line Transaction Processing) system and then design the dimensions and facts for meeting the requirements of the OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) system or Data Mart. Presented in a lecture and workshop format, participants will construct star schemas and learn Data Warehouse modeling and design through hands-on techniques and exercises.

Audience: This course is for Data Analysts, Data Modelers, Database Administrators, Database Programmers.

Prerequisites: Relational Database Design (SYS215), Introduction to Data Warehousing (DATA10), or equivalent experience.

Objectives:

  • Understand star schemas and snowflake designs
  • Understand dimensional modeling
  • Understand dimension outriggers, degenerate dimensions and other variations in the data warehouse model
  • Create a star schema
  • Determine which dimensions to include in the data warehouse and select the dimension granularity
  • Understand the three kinds of fact tables
Outline:
  • Introduction and review of data modeling
    • OLTP vs. OLAP
      • Star Schemas
        • Dimensions and Facts
          • Creating Fact Tables
            • Outrigger Dimensions
Elective Hours (Cum. Classroom Time): 12

              CEUs: 1.2
